13 dead in Tehri dam mishap
Tehri, August 3
In a major mishap in the T3 tunnel near the 2400 MW Tehri dam, many labourers were buried alive, while at least 10 were injured, late on Monday night.

Punjab withdraws power cuts, restores normal timings
Chandigarh, August 3
While the Punjab State Electricity Board today withdrew all sorts of power cuts imposed on industry and domestic sector in rural and urban areas, the state government today restored the normal timings of government offices and shops in all parts of Punjab.

NDA ends parliamentary panel boycott
New Delhi, August 3
The boycott of Parliamentary Committees by the NDA ended today following an agreement on “give and take” between the Opposition and the ruling UPA coalition after Leader of the Opposition L.K. Advani met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee.

The government today unveiled a safe and secure high-yielding savings instrument for senior citizens whereby they can invest a maximum of Rs 15 lakh in a post office, earning an interest of 9 per cent per annum.

Mr S.K. Bankar, ex-private secretary to former Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal, was today questioned by the CBI for his alleged role in helping the syndicate of Abdul Karim Telgi in the multi-crore fake stamp paper scam.

Main battle tank ‘Arjun’ to roll out on Aug 7
Chennai, August 3
The much-awaited indigenously produced main battle tank (MBT) “Arjun” will roll out on Saturday (August 7). The MBT project was initiated almost two decades ago. Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee will hand over “Arjun” tanks to the Chief of Army Staff, Gen N.C. Vij, at a function here on Saturday, according to a Defence Ministry press statement issued here today.
