India and Pakistan today held a “structured” bilateral dialogue on the issue of Jammu and Kashmir after a gap of six years and proposed to each other a range of new Confidence Building Measures (CBMs), including Kashmir-specific CBMs.

Mr Ajay Singh Chautala of the INLD and Mr Tarlochan Singh, Chairman of the National Minorities Commission, were elected to the Rajya Sabha from Haryana here today. Mr Tarlochan Singh, who contested as an Independent candidate, was supported by the INLD, the BJP, the BSP and three Independent candidates.

The police today claimed to have arrested all the five accused in the post-Godhra Derol massacre in which a mob killed 10 members of a family.

Four sentenced to death
Nainital, June 28
A district court today awarded death sentence to four youths for raping and murdering a six-year-old girl. The district court Judge, Mr R.K. Sharma, describing the case as “rarest of rare” said the four deserved death penalty because the girl involved in the case was a minor.

The US-led coalition transferred sovereignty to an interim Iraqi government today, speeding the move by two days in an apparent bid to surprise insurgents who may have tried to sabotage the step toward self-rule.
