Students protest against ‘exam’ postponement Chandigarh, June 27 The test was cancelled after the Education Department of Punjab found that it had forgot to mention about the reservation quota in an earlier advertisement to call applications for the test. The candidates lamented that no prior notice about the cancellation of the written test had been given. Officials of the Education Department claimed that a public notice about the cancellation had been given in newspapers. The department had hired a Delhi-based private agency, National Educational Consultants India to conduct the test. On the evening of June 25, the agency called up the authorities at GGDSD College, Sector 32, one of the examination centres to convey about the cancellation of the test. Dr A.C.Vaid, Principal of the GGDSD College, told the Tribune that he had no option but to put a public notice about the cancellation outside the main gate of the college. He said it was unfortunate that the paper had been cancelled. Many of the candidates from Amritsar and Bathinda, who had gathered at GGDSD College told The Tribune that they reached the city last evening as they could not have reached the examination centres on time today due to long travelling distance. The Secretary ( Education), Punjab, Ms Tejinder Kaur, said the government had postponed the recruitment test as information about the quota for the reserved categories could not be publicised. The advertisement was given in newspapers on June 26, a day before the date for the written test. A candidate from Amritsar, Gagandeep Singh, said the paper should had been postponed due to the fault of the department. The notice about the postponement should have been widely publicised some days in advance as thousands of students were scheduled to appear in the test. The department is not going to compensate for the bus fares spent by the candidates to reach the examination centres, added Harshdeep, another candidate from Barnala. The agitated candidates lamented that address of the examination centre had also not been mentioned correctly in the admit card issued by the Education Department. The department has now invited applications from the candidates of reserved category within 21 days of publication of a fresh advertisement. The candidates who have already been issued admit cards need not apply. The fresh date of the examination would now be notified late on, said an officer of the department. |

Revise policy on giving tax sops: Sampat Panchkula, June 27 He said that instead of declaring an entire state as backward and granting sops, the policy needs to be revised so that an area is declared as backward and benefits and concessions can reach the backward pockets in each state. Prof Sampat Singh said that the state government had taken up this matter at the small scale industries meeting held in Delhi recently. The Finance Minister said that the state government had announced a common minimum slab for power tariff for tubewell connections, instead of having different slabs for farmers in the state. He said the system of having different slabs was introduced by former Deputy Prime Minister, Devi Lal in 1978. He had made two different slabs for farmers in different parts, depending on the water bearing strata in the area. Later, Mr Bansi Lal, in his tenure as Chief Minister had made four different slabs. He said that the people’s mandate in the recent Lok Sabha elections was fractured, as people had voted against the National Democratic Alliance, and not against the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD). We suffered at the hustings because we were part of the NDA Government. “We are now trying to find reasons for our defeat, and efforts are being made to rejuvenate the party’s position,” he said. Prof Sampat Singh said that highway patrol had been introduced on the National Highways running through the state, and only the highway patrol was authorised to put up barricades. The Chief Minister, Mr Om Prakash Chautala, has already given instructions to the Deputy Commissioners and Superintendents of Police to ensure that the district police do not put their nakas on the highways. The Finance Minister earlier chaired the monthly meeting of District Grievance Committee meeting at the HSIDC complex in Sector 6. As many as 14 complaints were put up in the meeting, and 10 were solved on the spot. Prof Sampat Singh gave directions to the concerned officials for solving the other complaints. |

Antecedents of 931 servants verified Chandigarh, June 27 However, the response seemed to be poor in most of police stations except in Sector 26 where more than half of the total number of servants were registered. The Sector 26 police station registered 457 new servants in its campaign in Sectors 26, 27, 28, 7 and Bapu Dham. Most of the police stations had been instructed to carry out the day-long campaign but police stations of Sectors 34, 3 and 11 did not participate in the drive either because they had not been given a schedule or they were not informed about it. The police, however, did a major job sending its beat staff to each house to inform its occupants about the day-long campaign. Certain people, however, said the response would have been better had the police announced the programme in newspapers. The police, however, gathered information from each house through the movement of the beat staff. |
