SONU Kakkar, the singer of the hit song Babuji jara dheere chalo bijli khadi yahan bijli khadi from the film Dum, has bagged the Best Debutant Singer MTV Immies Award. For someone as popular she is, Sonu’s unassuming demeanour comes as a surprise. She is shy while giving interviews. But once you have broken the ice with her, she is more than eager to tell you about her forthcoming projects. At present, Sonu is one of the most sought-after singers in the Hindi music industry. She has a unique style of singing and having proved her talent, she is looking forward to a bright future. Sonu Kakkar was born in Rishikesh. She gave her first public performance at the age of four when she sang a bhajan, Sun maiya sun before an appreciative audience. Her parents later shifted to Delhi so that she could pursue a career in music. Before coming to Mumbai, she used to sing bhajan at jagrans in Delhi. She is very fond of Sufi music, and is a fan of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. After the Babuji song she sang for Chowta’s Mitti. She also sang Seduction Saanwaria in Kaizad Gustad’s Boom. She is now singing for Hum Do Hamara Ek starring Govinda, Mahima Chaudhry and Raveena Tandon. The song Sayonee Mainu Ishque Ho Gaya is a dance number composed by Sukhwinder Singh. She is also doing a project with Talvin Singh, one with Shivamani and another with composer Santokh Singh. — DP |
