CBI raids at 74 places in country

The CBI today carried out nationwide raids at 74 places and registered 389 cases against 50 persons, out of whom 30 are government servants.

This was disclosed by the CBI Director, Mr U.S. Mishra, at a press conference here today. Mr Mishra said the raids were still continuing at 13 places in Delhi, 24 places in Mumbai, seven in Nashik, three in Patna, two in Hyderabad and 12 in Visakhapatnam.

He said a case of disproportionate assets had been registered against seven government servants belonging to the UTI, Central Excise, Income Tax, Cement Corporation of India, BSNL and insurance and customs. Among other cases were that against the Protector of Immigrants at Chandigarh for giving clearance to as many as 370 persons on the basis of fake and forged documents.

Among the important cases, search was going on at the place of Additional Commissioner of Customs for allegedly entering into conspiracy with certain private parties, thereby causing a loss of Rs 15 crore to the exchequer.

“In these cases, cash valuables and securities worth Rs 28.72 lakh have been seized and movable and immovable properties worth Rs 7.43 crore has been detected,” Mr Mishra said.

A 1993 batch Indian Customs and Central Excise officer was booked by the CBI for possessing illegal wealth, Mr Mishra said, adding that assets worth Rs 4.12 crore in the name of the suspected officer and his family members had been detected till now. A case had been registered against Joint Commissioner of Income Tax for allegedly amassing huge assets through corrupt means.

Among other cases registered by the agency included a case against the Regional Director of Ministry of Health, Lucknow, for fraudulently misappropriating Rs 33.3 lakh of government funds, against general manager of TRIFED for allegedly giving undue pecuniary advantage to certain private firms and causing a loss of Rs 1.10 crore, against senior Vice-President of the UTI Mumbai for allegedly accumulating assets disproportionate to the known sources of his income.

The senior director said in today’s special drive, 22 joint surprise checks and raids were conducted along with departments of the CGHS, HAL, EPF, Customs and Central Excise to detect cases of malpractises and criminal misconduct.

The director said that raids were also conducted at seven unaided dispensaries of the MCD hospitals in Delhi.
