Tribune News Service

Srinagar, June 23
The Army has foiled an infiltration bid, killing three armed infiltrators in Kupwara district of north Kashmir. Two militants were killed in another encounter in the Lolab area of Kupwara district yesterday.

Nineteen pedestrians were injured, three of them seriously, when militants hurled a grenade in Beijbehara town, 40 km from here, on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway this morning. The three seriously injured were immediately rushed to hospitals here while others were being treated at the Anantnag district hospital and the local hospital at Beijbehara.

The police said militants hurled a grenade towards a passing convoy of security forces at 10:10 am near the government hospital, which missed the intended target and exploded on the road, causing injuries to 19 pedestrians. Militants hurled another grenade near the Jammu and Kashmir Bank branch at about 11.20 am, which exploded without causing any damage.

A defence spokesman said alert troops foiled an infiltration attempt in the Karnah sector of Kupwara district when they noticed suspicious movement of the infiltrators. The militants were told to surrender, but they resorted to firing on troops. Three militants were killed in exchange of fire. Their identity was yet to be ascertained.

With this, the number of infiltrators killed in the area went up to 14 during the past 10 days. Attempts at infiltration had started going up with the melting of snow along high mountain passes.

Two unidentified militants were killed in an encounter with security forces at Lalpora in the Lolab area of Kupwara district yesterday.
