Ahmedabad, June 18
Shamima Jahan Sheikh, mother of Ishrat Jahan Sheikh, one of the alleged LeT terrorists killed by the Gujarat police, today demanded a CBI inquiry into the encounter, claiming that her daughter was innocent.

“My daughter was innocent and not involved in any terrorist activity,” Shamima told reporters at the Civil Hospital here.

Shamima, who arrived in the city this morning accompanied by several persons from Mumbra to claim her daughter’s body, alleged that they were not allowed to get the post-mortem examination report of Ishrat.

Asked whether the crime branch grilled her, Shamima said she was asked several questions about Ishrat’s background, friends and activities and that she was asked not to talk to the media.

To a query if she knew about Ishart’s whereabouts when she was “missing” from home, Shamima said her daughter had gone for a job interview and had told her that she would return soon.

NHRC takes cognisance of report on Ishrat
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, June 18
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken cognisance of a news report on the killing of Ishrat Jahan, a Mumbai college student, and three young men in Gujarat for allegedly plotting the assassination of Gujarat Chief Minister, Narendra Modi.

The commission has directed the Director-General of Police, Gujarat, and the SSP, Ahmedabad, to take appropriate action with regard to investigation of the case as per guidelines laid down by the commission in its letters dated March 29, 1997, and December 2, 2003, to all Chief Ministers.

The commission said that the report `Innocent blood on Gujarat cops hands? Thane police gives Ishrat Clean Chit’ said that Ishrat’s background came clean on Thursday when the Thane police checked her record.

The report further said that Ahmedabad police has acquired a reputation of shooting first and asking questions later.

It has failed to come up with a plausible explanation on how the four persons were planning to kill Mr Modi.
