BJP against Jethmalani’s internal autonomy move
Tribune News Service

Jammu, June 11
The BJP state vice-president, Prof. Hari Om yesterday asked Mr Ram Jethmalani, chairman of the Kashmir committee, to refrain from further complicating the situation in Jammu and Kashmir by raising the issue of internal autonomy for state.

Prof Hari Om yesterday questioned the authority of Mr Jethmalani to promise internal autonomy for the state during his talks with the separatists at Srinagar on Wednesday.

He said that Mr Jethmalani has no right to speak on behalf of the people of Kashmir, leave alone the people of Ladakh and Jammu, who were apposed to the idea of the state getting any kind of dispensation that drove it away from the national mainstream.

He said that Mr Jethmalani should remember that the people of Kashmir were not a homogeneous society as they were divided into five groups. The political demands of these groups range from independence to merger with Pakistan to greater autonomy or limited accession and closer integration with India.

Prof Hari Om said that the need of the time was to give a secular orientation to the Kashmir polity and integrate the people of the valley with rest of the country so that they were able to enjoy the fruit of Indian democracy. Any political concessions to the people of Kashmir on the basis of religion would only create a volcanic situation not only in Jammu and Ladakh but also in rest of the country.

He said that the exigency of the time demands reorganisation of the state on a regional basis and full empowerment of the people of Jammu and Ladakh who stand completely alienated from the valley-centric Kashmiri leadership.
