Mulayam to consult Left about joining government
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, May 14
The Samajwadi Party today authorised its President Mulayam Singh Yadav to take a decision on joining a “secular” government at the Centre in consultation with the Left parties.

Party general secretary Amar Singh said after meetings of newly-elected MPs and party’s parliamentary board that Mr Yadav would take a decision in consultation with the Left parties.

Mr Yadav, whose refusal to support Congress President Sonia Gandhi in 1999 on account of her foreign origin had aborted her plans of forming a government, was in touch with CPM general secretary Harkishen Singh Surjeet about the formation of a coalition government at the Centre.

Mr Amar Singh said any decision taken in consultation with the Left parties on government formation would be acceptable to the SP.

Declaring that the SP was committed to secularism and wanted a secular alternative to the NDA government at the Centre, he said the party was ready for any sacrifice for this.
