Mamata’s mother in ICU after attack

Kolkata, May 11
Union Coal Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee has alleged that her mother was assaulted by CPI (M) activists who attacked her house last night.

According to a complaint filed with the police, Ms Banerjee said her mother, Ms Gayatri Banerjee, was injured in the attack at her South Kolkata residence and admitted to a city nursing home.

Ms Banerjee said she was away from home when the attack occurred and alleged that two of her family members, besides her mother were assaulted by the CPI(M) activists.

She alleged the party workers indulged in post-poll violence and did not even spare her mother.

Doctors attending on Ms Gayatri Banerjee said she was in the ICU with injuries on the head, face and stomach.

The Trinamool Congress leader had accused the state police of behaving like Left Front cadres and alleged large-scale irregularities during the Lok Sabha polling in West Bengal.

Ms Banerjee said she had lodged an FIR with the Kasba police station against the CPI(M) violence and beating up of the agents in her constituency.

“I have discussed the incident with the Election Commission and then a written complaint,” she said.

She said as her party was strong in the Kasba areas of South Kolkata, the CPI(M) had allegedly engaged a ‘’big cadre force” to beat up her election agents and workers.

“Two of my agents are in hospital. Another one is admitted to the ICCU in a hospital. A few others are missing,” she said. — UNI
