Islamabad, May 1
Pakistan today took over as the president of the United Nations Security Council amid deepening crisis in Iraq.
This will be the second time when Pakistan assumes the presidency during its two-year term in the Security Council before its term expires at the end of this year.
“We are taking the presidency at a time when the international community is confronted with serious challenges,” a senior Pakistani foreign ministry spokesman said.
Pakistan would be council’s president for one month. The council is to meet on May 17 for discussing peacekeeping operations, he said.
Foreign Minister Khurshid Mahmood Kasuri would leave for New York to preside over the meeting, which will assess the UN’s peacekeeping operations. — UNI
