Tribune News Service

New Delhi, April 30
In yet another arrest, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has nabbed a Delhi police constable who was allegedly making threatening calls to Mr Ranjit Verma’s family on behalf of Crime Branch Sub-Inspector Sanjay Gupta who was also arrested by the sleuths yesterday.

The CBI sleuths also recovered Rs 2.5 lakh in cash from the residence of the Sub-Inspector besides several other documents which were being scrutinized.

The cops were allegedly threatening to implicate the family members of the accused, Mr Ranjit Verma, the prime accused in the CBSE-PMT paper leak case. According to the sleuths, Mr Gupta allegedly demanded Rs 20 lakh from the family members of Ranjit Verma and threatened them to implicate them, if they failed to cough up the money.

However, after negotiations the family members agreed to pay Rs 6.5 lakh and an advance of Rs 2.5 lakh was paid to Mr Gupta at his office. Sources said after the arrest of the Sub-Inspector, Mr Sanjay Gupta, an investigative officer in the paper leak case, the sleuths were looking for constable Umed Singh who had made threatening calls on behalf of Mr Gupta to the family of Mr Ranjit Verma.

Accordingly the constable was arrested late last night and the CBI confronted him with the taped conversation in which he had made threatening calls to Mr Verma’s father Mr O. P. Verma.

After the arrest of two Delhi policemen by the CBI in the CBSE PMT question paper leak case the Delhi police today transferred the high-profile case from the crime branch’s anti-kidnapping unit to its Economic Offences Wing. With the transfer of the case, a new team headed by an Assistant Commissioner of Police of EOW will investigate the matter.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Railways) Dependra Pathak said the case from now would be supervised by Deputy Commissioner of Police (EOW) Dinesh Bhatt.

After the arrest of Mr Gupta and Mr Singh, the entire team led by ACP Shivendra Tiwari had come under the CBI scanner as the agency was investigating whether the arrested policemen had passed on benefits to other members. Earlier, after the arrest of the IO, the Delhi police had made Sub-Inspector Arvind Kumar the new IO last night.
