Legal Correspondent

New Delhi, April 28
A Supreme Court lawyer has sought “mandatory” consent from the Attorney General of India for filing a contempt petition in the apex court against 25 judges of the Punjab and Haryana High Court for proceeding on mass leave on April 19.

Advocate Dr Vikas Vashisth in his letter written to Attorney-General Soli J Sorabjee, the copies of which were circulated to media here, said: “I wish to file the enclosed contempt petition (criminal) in the Supreme Court. Kindly grant consent to file the same in the interest of justice.”

While circulating the copies of his letter to media, Dr Vashisth told reporters that it was mandatory under the Supreme Court rules to seek the Attorney General’s consent for filing of such a petition.
