Stampede snowballs into poll issue
Opposition demands action; BJP disownsTandon’s party
New Delhi, April 13
Even as the BJP denied any link with its leader Lalji Tandon’s birthday party which led to a stampede killing at least 21 persons in Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee parliamentary constituency, the Opposition parties today demanded “appropriate action” by the Election Commission terming the distribution of sarees as a clear violation of the Model Code of Conduct.

EC nod must for political ads on TV: SC
New Delhi, April 13
To prevent slanderous campaign through surrogate ads against one another by political parties and leaders during the coming elections, the Supreme Court today allowed the telecast of political advertisements on electronic media but only under its strict and comprehensive guidelines.

Calcutta IIM faculty moves Supreme Court
Kolkata, April 13
The faculty of the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta, today moved the Supreme Court praying for an order impleading it as a respondent in the fee cut case already pending before the apex court.

No time-frame on resolving Kashmir issue , says Pervez
Islamabad, April 13
Making it clear that he has not fixed any time-frame for resolving the Kashmir issue, Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf has asserted that the dialogue process between India and Pakistan on all issues, including Kashmir, has to move forward when the Foreign Ministers meet in July or August.

Pak national’s nomination papers rejected

The papers of a Pakistani national, Zulfikar Ali, who had fielded himself as a candidate for the Jammu Lok Sabha seat, were rejected this evening by Returning Officer Naveen Chaudhary following the re-scrutiny of his documents.

SC upholds govt levy on rice millers

In a major relief to the Haryana Government, the Supreme Court today upheld an Act passed by the state government, providing for imposition of levy on rice millers for procuring paddy for making rice for sale to exporters.

200 trees axed in Gurgaon park

Throwing environmental concern to the winds, the promoters and builders of South City, UNITECH Limited, have felled about 200 trees in a public park in the past fortnight. The cutting of trees continues with the apparent aim of clearing the park of all the trees.
