Tohra’s widow unlikely to contest
Tribune News Service

Tohra (Patiala), April 10
Mrs Joginder Kaur, widow of the late Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee president, Mr Gurcharan Singh Tohra, is unlikely to replace Capt Kanwaljit Singh as the SAD’s candidate from the Patiala parliamentary seat even though she may reject the facilities being offered to her by the ruling Congress government.

Akali sources said it would not be possible for Mrs Joginder Kaur to contest the parliamentary elections due to the “sudden shock” suffered by her following the death of her husband as well as the fact that she has never dabbled in politics till now. Mrs Tohra’s son-in-law, Mr Harmel Singh, when questioned on the issue said no talks had been held in this regard with the SAD nor had any offer come from the SAD to make Mrs Tohra the party candidate from Patiala.

“We are still in a state of shock”, said Mr Harmel Singh Tohra saying there was no point in discussing such matters before the “bhog” of the Akali leader. Other supporters of Mr Tohra while talking to TNS, said in case the SAD wanted to accommodate Mrs Tohra politically, it could easily propose her name for the Rajya Sabha for which it had only announced a candidate.

Meanwhile, Capt Kanwaljit Singh when questioned on the issue, said he had never met Mrs Joginder Kaur to make any such offer. He said he had already completed the first phase of campaigning and was likely to start the second phase soon.
