Hurriyat takes up peace moves with Pak MPs

New Delhi, March 28
Hurriyat Conference leaders today met a delegation of Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) lawmakers here and discussed the ongoing Indo-Pak peace process.

The Hurriyat team, comprising chairman Maulana Abbas Ansari, Abdul Gani Bhat, Mirwaiz Umer Farooq and Bilal Lone, met the seven-member Pakistani delegation, headed by PPP Senior Vice-Chairman Makhdoom Amin Fahim, at the residence of Kashmir Committee Chairman Ram Jethmalani.

During the two-hour luncheon meeting, the two sides discussed the present Indo-Pak peace process and developments taking place in the two countries regarding Kashmir.

The PPP delegation supported the Hurriyat move for an intra-Kashmir dialogue and conveyed to the amalgam leaders that it would raise the matter at appropriate quarters in Pakistan on their return.

“We have been satisfied with the meeting as after all, we find the same sense of urge for peace among Pakistanis as it is among Indians,” Mr Bhat said after the meeting.

He said the Pakistani delegation welcomed the stand of the Hurriyat for trying to solve the matter through negotiations.

Besides Mr Fahim, the PPP delegation comprised spokesman Nafees S. Siddiqi, former Pakistani Foreign Minister Sardar Asif Ahmed Ali, Mohammed Yousaf Talpur, Fozia Habib, Chaudhury Manzoor Ahmed and Anwar Beigh.

Mr Farooq said it was a good interaction with the Pakistani delegation. “We put across our point of view to them. The ongoing dialogue process with the Government of India and the present situation in Jammu and Kashmir came up for discussion,” he added.

About their second round of talks with Mr Advani yesterday, the Mirwaiz said, “We held a positive discussion. Issues of human right violation, release of detenues and the progress made after the first round of talks on January 22 were taken up.”

The Hurriyat leader said they also discussed the roadmap to resolve the Kashmir issue. “We discussed the roadmap not in specifics but in general,” he added.

On the alleged human right violations in the state, Mr Farooq said both sides agreed that the excesses should stop immediately.

About the release of detenues, he said the Deputy Prime Minister assured the Hurriyat delegation that more political prisoners would be freed soon.

He said the joint screening committee would meet next week to review the cases of prisoners detained under POTA and PSA. Regarding the Lok Sabha poll in the state, the Mirwaiz said elections were a non-issue for the Hurriyat. — PTI, UNI
