Ethnic violence claims 31 lives in Assam

Guwahati, March 24
The Kuki-Karbi ethnic clash spread throughout Karbi Anglong district, killing 31 persons since last night while unofficially the toll was put even higher.

The Kukis last night attacked two Karbi villagers near Dilloi under Bokajan police station and killed as many as 26 villagers.

This afternoon at Manja, about 25 km from Diphu, the Karbis retaliated killing five Kukis, taking the death toll to 31, official sources said.

The security forces have so far recovered 31 bodies from three villages even as the Karbis geared up for more revenge, already calling an 11-hour Karbi Anglong bandh tomorrow morning.

The top brass of the Assam police went into a huddle fearing violent backlash from the more powerful Karbi militants in the weeks to come. — UNI
