Tales of Sikh currency
Coins that never were
Surinder Singh

THE study of Sikh coinage has not received the attention it deserves from its historians and numismatists. The comments of historians are often not supported by sufficient historical evidence and are often not based on a proper investigation and analysis of even those coins that are readily available.

Putting together a jigsaw
S
URINDER Singh has the intense look of a man with a mission. Tall, though not overbearing, this six-foot-tall Sikh with a Pathan background sits in his study in Chandigarh, amidst hundreds of books, all neatly arranged and catalogued. This speaks of a tidy mind, which bodes well for someone who is researching "fragments" of history based on Sikh coinage.

Samvatsara 2061: Change for the better, no fear of war
Sansar Chandra
O
UR scriptures emphasise the sanctity and piety of Samvatsara Phaladesh. The new Samvatsara—2061—commences its journey at 4.10 am on the night between March 20 and 21. But according to the Vikrama calendar, it must coincide with the sunrise to be designated as Samvatsara.

Soaking in the peace of Pachmarhi
Sujoy Dhar
M
ADHYA Pradesh Tourism’s brochure describes Pachmarhi as a verdant jewel where nature has found exquisite expressions in myriad enchanting ways. What overcomes a tourist visiting the place is its sheer tranquility, with the plateau hemmed by the mountains with its trees, open fields and red soil.

Total recall
Witness to history
T
HE Royal Indian Navy Mutiny of 1946 was a milestone in the history of India’s freedom struggle. Madan Singh, now in his mid-eighties, was then a Petty Officer (telegraphist). As vice-president of the strike committee, Madan Singh led the mutiny from the front. He recalls the stormy days of May 18,1946.

Starry crusaders & circus beasts
A
CTRESS Shilpa Shetty is the latest Bollywood personality to join the campaign against performing animals at circuses. Joining the campaign by People for Ethical Treatment of Animals, Shetty poses in a hugging bodysuit about to leap through a ring of fire. The ad has the tagline "Beaten, Lonely and Abused" and "Boycott the Circus".

Sammelan loses star guest
Varinder Singh
W
ITH Ustad Vilayat Khan’s death, Punjab, especially Jalandhar, has lost a celebrated guest, a star performer at its annual Harballabh Sangeet Sammelan. Despite his many engagements all over the world, the maestro never forgot Jalandhar and cherished the love of its people.
