Craze called "PT"
Geetanjli Pareek

WHEN a majority of us are fast asleep in our cosy beds, in the early hours of morning, we find groups of students rushing to their tuition classes.

Whether summer on winter, from early morning to afternoon or even late nights, one finds them in streets hurrying for their ‘PT’.

What is this PT? It is nothing but a slang for private tuition. There is only one word which governs their life and that is "study".

The attendance in classrooms of educational institutions is shrinking whereas it is escalating in ‘PT’. Students’ craze for ‘PT’ cannot be dispensed with for all and any purpose i.e. even just for passing up to scoring a rank in an examination academic or competitive.

Formal institutionalised classes are losing importance among the student community. Not only students, the guardians, the public and even teachers are seized with the doctrine of ‘PT’.

The problem is not confined to primary and secondary stages of education alone. It is gradually moving to higher stages of education.

Why has ‘PT’ become an important system of education? The factors as perceived by students, parents, tutors and others in this regard differ.

Factors perceived by students are parental persuasion, securing good marks, better cooperation from teachers less benefit from classroom teaching, peer persuasion, additional knowledge, high academic competition, unfinished school syllabus, clarification doubts and also fear of "humiliation".

Parents rationalise the importance of ‘PT’ differently. i.e. high academic competition, a substitute to home guidance and for securing good marks/ranks in
examination.

According to teachers, the motivating factors for students and parents for ‘PT’ are - better marks and ranks in examination, additional knowledge, unfinished/poorly finished syllabus, lack of parental help at home and the rising competition.

The teachers, too, believe that ‘PT’ is growing not as a reaction to poor quality of teaching at schools, but as parallel source of learning.

Whatever the reason for this very craze, the truth is, ‘PT’ is successful and gaining importance day by day, not only in urban areas but in rural and backward areas too.

‘PT’ is definitely becoming a source of stress and strains for the students.

Instead of making student life easier, by way of providing requisite knowledge and educational skills, it has become more stressful as students are left with no time to relax.

They are becoming more irritable and anxious.

Students need to strike a balance between study and leisure.

‘PT’ classes should act as a supplement to regular classroom teaching and not a substitute for the same.
