Bullying rampant in schools, say studies Studies
reveal about 20 to 30 per cent of children are regularly involved in incidents of bullying, either as bullies or as victims. According to a study quoted by a leading healthcare portal in India, out of 2,000 Class VI students from 11 schools in urban areas as many as 22 per cent of the children were involved in bullying — seven per cent as perpetrators, nine per cent as victims and six per cent as both perpetrators and victims. “All demonstrated greater school-related problems and more difficulty in getting along with others than students not involved in bullying. Despite these problems, however, bullies enjoy a high social standing among their classmates and were psychologically strong”, according to Dr Sunil Shroff of Medindia.net. “Also, bullying may begin as simple teasing, taunting and childish tiffs but it can even lead to more severe forms of violence amongst children”, says Mr Shroff. “The problem of bullying cuts across all socio-economic classes. Lot of bullying takes place not just in schools but even among families and at the society level. Peer pressure, media and social inputs also aggravate the problem”, says Dr Jitendra Nagpal, Consultant Psychiatrist, Vidyasagar Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (VIMHANS), New Delhi. Educationalists feel that the scourge is an offshoot of the prevalent social mindset. Exposure of children to violence and exclusivism has increased manifold while tolerance has gone down. Whether it is television, films, the print media or even cartoons, all modes of information depict violence as a means of dominance, making children more aggressive and elitist”, says Vandana Puri, principal of a school. As a result of this aggressiveness, the frequency of violence and bullying experienced and witnessed by adolescents at school has increased. In most schools, every class has as many as three to four per cent of children who resort to bullying”, says Puri. Another study points out that children in primary classes are twice likely to be bullied as those in higher grades and bullying is more violent in the older grades. “It is normally seen that perpetrators are the ones who enjoyed seeing more action and violence-oriented programmes on the television. However, domestic violence and broken families also play a crucial role in making a child bully. Besides, economic disparities act as a means to show upmanship leading to bullying in schools”, says Puri. Elaborating
further, Nagpal says: “It’s a myth that only boys are perpetrators. These days we find that increasing number of girls are indulging in bullying. But normally there are more reported cases of violence or bullying by boys than girls.” About the effect of bullying on children, Nagpal
says: “Victims of bullying are likely to be anxious, passive, sensitive, physically weak who feel they deserve the abuse. If left unchecked, this form of abuse can leave lifelong scars making the child more susceptible to depression and poor self-esteem.” Experts say bullied children have difficulty dealing with the abuse themselves and need adult guidance. “In most cases, children do not discuss about bullying incidents with their parents as they do not want adult intervention. So in a bid to prevent such incidents, parents and schools must work together”, says Bhavana Gandhi, a school counsellor. “Confidence-building is the most important tool available to handle this menace effectively. Efforts must be made to bring out the problem in the open and make it clear that a bully is no hero”, says Puri.
