7 militants killed, Capt injured in J&K Srinagar, February 18 Official sources said security forces killed three militants in a fierce encounter at Kokernag in the south Kashmir district of Anantnag today. The encounter ensued after a search party was attacked by the militants, the sources said, adding that three AK rifles and other arms and ammunition were recovered from the slain militants. Meanwhile, militants shot dead a girl, Haleema, at Beerwah in the central Kashmir district of Badgam late last night. A security force jawan was also injured when militants in a car hurled a hand grenade towards the party at Chandhar Pampore in Pulwama district last evening. Militants later managed to escape. Security forces gunned down two militants at Hri in Poonch district of Jammu region last night. Security forces and the police in a joint operation recovered 28 hand grenades, seven detonators, 48 UBGL grenades,5 RPG boosters, six stick grenades, 200 rounds of ammunition and 40 metres of fuse wire at Chalpora Handwara. However, no one was arrested. Security forces during different operations also recovered one sniper rifle,117 rounds of ammunition, one pistol with magazine, a remote control box, three detonators, seven hand grenades across the valley overnight. The Border Security Force (BSF) has busted two militant hideouts in Kashmir and recovered some arms and ammunition, including a Chinese pistol and 10 grenades, since last evening, the BSF said. Acting on a tip-off, 137 Battalion of the BSF recovered a Chinese pistol with one magazine and eight rounds, a radio set, 10 grenades and six detonators from a militant hideout set up in the Sumnag forest in frontier district of Kupwara today, a spokesman for the force said. He said 94 Battalion of the force also recovered a mauser pistol with one magazine and one round from Boniyar in Baramulla district last evening. JAMMU: Two ultras of the Jaish-e-Mohammad have been killed and an Army Captain has been injured in two separate incidents in Poonch district of Jammu division since last night, official sources said here on Wednesday. The ultras barged into the house of Gulab Din in the Sharuti-Hari area of Poonch district last evening, the sources said, adding that on receiving specific information Rashtriya Rifle troops along with policemen rushed to the area and laid a siege of the house. When security forces asked the militants to surrender, they opened fire which was retaliated and in the ensuing gunbattle both the ultras were killed, the sources said. No one was injured among the inmates of the house, they said. The security forces recovered two AK assault rifles and some ammunition from the slain militants, whose identity is being ascertained. In another incident an Army officer, identified as Captain Tanweer, received bullet wounds in his leg on Wednesday as some militants opened fire when he was on his way towards Surankote airfield in Poonch district. Meanwhile security forces have busted a militant hideout in the Banihal area of Doda district and recovered from it two hand grenades, 460 kg of assorted ration and 60 litres of kerosene.

Plea to merge DA in basic pay Jammu, February 18 Mr Shastri said the Centre and the neighbouring states of Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh had already taken the step. He urged the Centre to set up the sixth Pay Commission due to rising prices. Mr Shastri demanded that the pending
installment of DA due from January should be released for the serving employees and the pensioners without any delay. |
ST status for Pahari-speaking people sought Jammu, February 18 The Forum leader called on Mr Naidu when he came here this afternoon and sought an ordinance declaring Pahari-speaking people as a Scheduled Tribe. The memorandum pointed out that such an ordinance was promulgated to declare Gujjar and Bakkarwal communities as Scheduled Tribes in 1989 when Parliament was dissolved. Forum leaders who met the BJP president were, Mr Mushtaq Ahmed Bukhari, Mirza Abdul Rahid, Mr Jahangir Mir and Mr M.D. Bandey. Many leaders of the community belonging to the Congress, the PDP and the National Conference were in the delegation. |
