Tribune News Service

Gurgaon, February 17
The call for a “bazaar bandh” today in protest against the failure of government to ensure law and order in the wake of murder of an employee of the electricity department evoked good response in old Gurgaon city. The bandh call came from the business community and was supported by all opposition parties like the Bajrang Dal and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad.

Main markets of Sadar Bazaar, Khandsa Road, Bassi Road, the New Railway Road and the Old Railway Road remain closed since morning. It was only at about 5 p.m. that a few shops opened their shutters.

In fact shops in these markets closed late last evening following the identification of the body of Suraj Bhan, an assistant lineman with the electricity department. The shops closed after about 100 persons, mainly activists of the Bajrang Dal, the Shiv Sena and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad assembled at Sohna Chowk following the identification of the body. The activists used force to get the shops closed yesterday.

The police recovered the body of Suraj Bhan, wrapped in clothes near the new police station in Sector 5 yesterday. The head and legs of the body were missing.

The legs were located in Sector 7 (extension) in the evening.

The family members of Suraj Bhan, who had gone to the police station to lodge a missing report were asked to have a look at the body. They identified the body. After the news of Suraj Bhan’s killing spread residents of the area marched in procession to the police station. Activists of the Bajrang Dal, the Shiv Sena and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad joined them leading to the closure of shops.

Leaders of the Shiv Sena, the Bajrang Dal, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and the Congress were on the road today to join the protest. The local business community is also agitated over the rising cases of violence and the deteriorating law and order in the city.

The feeling rife in the city is that the police has failed to control law and order and criminals have become active.

Meanwhile the police has arrested three persons in connection with the murder of Suraj Bhan.
