JPC report confirms pesticides in colas

New Delhi, February 4
The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on pesticide residue in soft drinks has taken a serious note of the working of the government, particularly the Ministry of Health, which took action only as a result of the findings of an NGO “rather than any systematic approach based on scientific studies”.

Delhi HC clears Rajiv Gandhi in Bofors case

New Delhi, February 4
What could be a major boost to the Congress just before the General Election, the Delhi High Court in an important ruling in the politically sensitive Rs 64 crore Bofors pay-off case today gave a clean chit to the then Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi, holding that there was no evidence to show that he or any public servant had got pecuniary benefits from Swedish company AB Bofors in the howitzer gun deal.

Justice S.N. Phukan, who is heading a one-man inquiry commission into the Tehelka expose that had put Defence Minister George Fernandes and his ministry in the dock over charges of bribery, today said that he had not given a clean chit to the minister.

The Lok Sabha today passed the Interim Budget with Finance Minister Jaswant Singh adding another appendix to the pre-election sop story through a slew of measures including the continuation of exemption on dividend distribution tax to open-ended equity oriented mutual fund schemes, a subsidy of Rs 8 per kg for tea growers and a Rs 100 crore fund for small scale industrial (SSI) units.
