Roorkee
IIT to hold admission test for MSc There was a time just 15 years ago, when seeking admission to a conventional M.Sc course was considered a natural phenomenon in science education. Then came the craze for professional education when students dropped B.Sc courses to join the engineering and medicine streams. Those who weren’t lucky enough switched to commerce and went ahead for BBA/MBA or did B.Sc to sit for MCA. This mad rush for professional education and consistent bypassing of mainline science stream has created a void in fundamental research sector, the result of which is obvious in various laboratories of the CSIR, DRDO and ICMR. Visit any national laboratory and you will find gray, weather-beaten scientists, mostly men, waiting for retirement and middle-aged women grappling with the incorrigible problem of distinguishing fundamental research from household chores. Look around and you will realise what harm the mad rush for professional education has done to research. The young blood, particularly boys, is totally missing in our national laboratories. To lure the youngsters for research, the Ministry of Human Resource Development has initiated hundreds of scholarships for 10+2 passouts and has recently announced 1,000 Swarn Jayanti Scholarships of Rs 2000 each for postgraduate science studies. In its effort to streamline science education, the MHRD has, to begin with, ordered for joint admission to the prestigious M.Sc courses run by the various Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) in the country. Now onwards, admission to all two-year full-time M.Sc programmes to the IITs will be held through an All-India joint admission test to M.Sc abbreviated as JAM. The test, for the academic session 2004-05 will be conducted by the IIT, Roorkee, which has been appointed the organising institute. According to Prof H.R. Wason, organising chairman of the JAM, the test will be held on May 8 and 9 all over the country and admission to the programme will be made on the basis of`A0 merit rank of JAM-2004. The application form and information brochure for the test is on sale from designated bank and IIT counters. The forms`A0and brochure can also be had by post from the organising `A0institute. The online registration of the candidates started at the IIT Roorkee website from January 27. The completed application forms must be submitted by March 15. The following are the programmes run by the respective IITs :
Having qualified in the JAM, the candidates shall be required to apply for admission to the respective Institute(s) where they wish to seek admission. A consolidated list of all programmes applied for admission in different IITs, in order of preference, shall be submitted`A0 on a prescribed option performa to the organising institute. The prescribed admission form & option performa will be available on the websites of all IITs and also on request from May 15 onwards. |
Environment
is new school mantra Back in the lap of nature - is the new mantra in school education. Rallying against indiscriminate use of plastic and deforestation, waste management, and proper utilisation of non-renewable resources, are now a part of the curriculum in schools all over the region. Unlike the yesteryears, when creation of eco clubs in schools was just meant to add on to the school’s brand image, the schools today, be it in the Punjab’s polluted industrial town of Ludhiana or the greener cities of Patiala and Chandigarh, seem to have got on to the green bandwagon. Says Ms Neena Khanna, Principal of Kundan Vidya Mandir, Ludhiana, "Environment education is as important a subject of study as science or literature. We organise weekly awareness programmes in the form of quizzes and last Saturday of each month is reserved for classes on environment-related subjects." Eco clubs are creating awareness
about environment protection. This is a far cry from the time when the
eco clubs woke up only around World Environment Day and did nothing
more than participate in "Save Environment" marches, or ban
the use of polythene on their premises. Blossoms School, Patiala, has
set up its own waste paper recycling plant. Informs Ms Ravi Singh,
Principal of the school, "We are using waste paper generated in
the schools to make shagun envelopes and birthday cards. The water
used in the school canteen and kitchen is reused in the garden. We
also organise awareness drives." DAV school-8, Chandigarh, now
has solar lights, a successful rainwater harvesting system and a drip
irrigation system for its vast greens. |
Re-evaluation
trend on the rise The dictionary meaning of re-evaluation is "reassessing the value of something", but for students this word has been consecrated for the act of getting their answer-books re-examined when not satisfied with the marks awarded in a particular subject. The number of students going for re-evaluation is growing with passing year. It is common practice among students placed under Compartment/reappear to opt for revaluation. The ever-increasing number of re-evaluation cases is a reflection of the dissatisfaction prevalent among students against the evaluation process as such. More often than not students feel they have not been awarded their due by the examiner and, hence, find re-evaluation as the only way out. Interestingly, in many cases there is a fabulous increase in the awards. That students often reap a rich dividend through revaluation is a testimony in itself to the chinks present in the evaluation process of not only of school boards, colleges and universities, but also professional institutions and state service commissions. Cases have been reported when examiners have marked the answer-books of a class without full knowledge of its syllabus or the prescribed study material. A couple of years back the evaluation work of a technical university had to be reviewed under the supervision of court. Only recently, students of a post-graduate class went for revaluation en masse. True, several faults have crept into the examination and evaluation system and a number of loopholes have been invented to corrupt it. Yet the onus of authentic evaluation rests with the teaching fraternity. The lukewarm attitude of a section of teachers towards examination-related assignments is responsible to a greater extent, for the ever growing malady of re-evaluation. It is natural for teachers on examination duty to feel disconcerted when at times they have to face humiliation and threats at the hands of anti-social elements. The growing menace of copying leaves many a teacher averse to perform examination duties. The increasing disenchantment, both from the examination and evaluation work, results in dearth of teachers and that too when the summer is at its peak. Interestingly, examination bodies have to remind teachers that examination-related work is also a constituent of their duties. An awakened examiner leaves no scope for reviewing his judgement. It is ironical to give the benefit of doubt when a whimsical examiner awards five marks and another one 15 marks to the same answer. Unless evaluation work is indent open in the time spirit the credibility of evaluation among students cannot be restored. The writer is Senior Lecturer in
