Fire at wedding kills 54
Srirangam (Tamil Nadu), January 23
Tragedy struck at a wedding ceremony when a fire engulfed the pandal on the first floor of a marriage hall in this temple town, killing 54 persons, including the bridegroom, and injuring 40, the police said. Thirtyfive-year-old Jayashri, the bride, was downstairs awaiting the “muhooratham” when the fire broke out as a video crew tried to fix the plug of a “focus lamp” that burst due to a short circuit.

Snow in Shimla, Kasauli; Kashmir cut off

A blinding snowstorm hit Shimla and several other parts of Himachal Pradesh this morning while snow, rain and landslides kept the Kashmir valley cut off from the rest of the country for the third day. Reports of hailstorms and heavy rain were also received from the plains all over the region.

Fresh sand deposits had been noticed in the septic tanks of the barrack of the escaped alleged assassins of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh, but the jail authorities had overlooked the findings.
