National award for H.K. Dua

Surat, January 18
The prestigious fourth C.K. Pithwala National Award for 2002 was given to the Editor-in-Chief of The Tribune, Mr H.K. Dua, at a special function here today.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Dua called upon the young generation to keep up a social mission-related temperament to bring about changes in society.

“Freedom fighters, including journalists of yesteryear, had taken up the mission for freedom and to remove the traditional social evils. We have to follow in their footsteps,” he said.

Veteran Gandhian leader Narayan Desai, who was the chief guest, said “today’s generation of journalists lacks sincerity and capability. They fail to go to the root cause and rely on material given, which is harmful to the profession and even to society.”

Instituted by the city-based Surat Shaher Patrakar Kalyan Nidhi, the city-level journalists award for the 4th and 5th year was given to local scribes — Pankaj Desai and Bharat Desai — associated with the local Gujarati dailies Gujarat Mitra and the Surat edition of Gujarat Samachar, respectively.

The sports journalists awards were given to Kumarpal Desai of Ahmedabad and city-based Ranji Trophy umpire and sports journalist Keki Dudhwala.

The critics awards were given to Suresh Dalal, Anil Joshi both from Mumbai, and Prakash Shah of Ahmedabad. — PTI
