Chandigarh, January 1
Holding the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) as premier investigation agency of the country, Mr Jagmeet Singh Brar, MP, and a General Secretary of the All-India Congress Committee (AICC), says the credibility of this agency, which has won the faith and trust of people, cannot be doubted.

Mr Brar, who is here in his new role of peacemaker in troubled Punjab Congress Committee, hailed the decision of the Punjab Chief Minister to entrust the inquiry into his son’s involvement in hawala transactions of Intranet company, saying that the Congress as a political party had never doubted the credibility of the CBI.

Talking about his immediate plan of forging unity among warring factions of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee and the Punjab Congress Legislature Party, he said he would visit every senior leader of the Punjab Congress in the next few days to invite him or her to participate in the historic maghi mela at Muktsar on January 13 so that the party could send a message of its unity.

“If we have to fight the Shiromani Akali Dal and the Bharatiya Janta Party in the coming Lok Sabha elections, then we have to have a major show of our unity and strength at Muktsar from where I intend to launch my electioneering campaign on that day,” said Mr Brar holding that his endeavour would be to bring all factions together. Senior central leaders will also be there.

Coming back to the crisis in Punjab Congress, he said that it was unfortunate that instead of giving people good governance, the party was facing a serious crisis. The High Command was fully aware of the problem and was keen to resolve the crisis at the earliest to the satisfaction of all.

Referring to charges of corruption levelled against the Chief Minister by Mrs Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, he said he had no comments to make, but hastened to add that the Chief Minister by ordering an inquiry under the Commission of Inquiry Act had done a good job.

“Personally I have nothing against the CBI. Mr Parkash Singh Badal has already met Mr Atal Bihari Vajpayee and demanded a CBI enquiry.

“Corruption will be an issue in the coming Lok Sabha elections and the Punjab Chief Minister has kept his promise of investigating all corrupt deeds of the previous SAD-BJP regime,” he said holding that an inquiry by a retired judge in the Intranet hawala transactions should be enough. He said he would not comment on the Chief Minister’s public statement that the CBI was functioning at the instance of the NDA government at the Centre.

He was hopeful that Congressmen would soon sink their differences and work unitedly for the coming Lok Sabha elections failing which they would face humiliation.
