Charges filed against MLA in Telgi case

Mumbai, December 29
The Special Investigating Team probing the fake stamp paper racket masterminded by Abdul Karim Telgi, on Monday filed chargesheets against nine persons, including an MLA from Andhra Pradesh, for their role in the scam.

According to sources here, the chargesheets have been filed against Telugu Desam Party’s MLA C. Krishna Yadav, Assistant Commissioner of Police Gokul B. Patil, Senior Inspector (Crime Branch, Mumbai) Datta Dal, inspectors Vashist Andale and Prabhakar Kakade, besides four others.

All of them have been charged under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act.

Mr Yadav along with Mr Anil Gote, a Samajwadi Party MLA from Maharashtra, are the two legislators to be arrested for their links with Telgi.

Meanwhile the office of the Maharashtra Governor has handed over a letter written by Mr Gote to the state government. Mr Gote, who is now in jail, alleged that he was arrested for his opposition to the ruling Congress-Nationalist Congress Party-led coalition in Maharashtra.

Earlier this year, the Opposition Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party, while trying to split the ruling coalition, had promised to install Mr Gote as the Speaker of the Maharashtra Assembly in case they succeeded in toppling the government. However, their effort failed as incumbent Speaker Arun Gujarathi disqualified several defectors from the NCP and barred them from voting in the House.

“The SIT probe is an eyewash and a reflection of factionalism within the police force,” Mr Gote wrote in his letter to Governor Mohammad Fazal.

Attempts by Mr Gote to attend the winter session of the Maharashtra legislature were foiled by the Bombay High Court which stayed his appeal in the matter.
