The crisis in the Punjab Congress today moved towards solution with the dissident camp and Chief Minister Amarinder Singh leaving it to Congress President Sonia Gandhi to take a final decision on the former’s demand for a leadership change.

Capt urges dissidents to resolve differences
Mehraj (Bathinda), December 17
While urging the dissidents to sort out their differences and to fight the SAD-BJP communal forces on a united platform in the coming Lok Sabha elections, the Punjab Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh, today categorically stated that criminal case pertaining to the embezzlement of funds and corruption registered against the state Agriculture Minister, Mrs Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, would not be taken back.

After declaring strike by government employees illegal earlier, the Supreme Court in another important judgement has directed the Centre and the state governments to take stringent action against hooligans indulging in violence and damaging private and public properties during “bandhs, hartals and strikes”.

Bomb kills 17 in Baghdad

A bomb by a fuel truck set off a huge fireball in which at least 17 persons were killed in Baghdad today, as violence gripped Iraq in the wake of the capture of Saddam Hussein.

Spying at Sukhbir’s house rocks RS

Alleged surveillance by personnel of the Punjab Police at residences of two members of the Upper House, including Shiromani Akali Dal leader Sukhbir Singh Badal, rocked the Rajya Sabha today with several BJP and Akali Dal members demanding the matter be referred to the Privileges Committee.

In an attempt to break the deadlock, a delegation of Punjab Congress MPs called on Mrs Rajinder Kaur Bhattal and Mrs Sukhbans Kaur Bhinder, both leaders of dissident MLAs, at their Punjab Bhavan camp office in New Delhi late this evening. The delegation had come with a set of proposals which dissidents outrightly rejected.
