Healthy, easy-to-handle tiffin a must
Gauri V. Singh

Tiffin is obviously an essential part of a child’s daily school routine. Lunch time at school is always a welcome break for children. And a healthy tiffin not only helps to make it better, but also gives the child a psychological edge and a physiological boast.

But what do we mean by a healthy tiffin? A healthy tiffin for a schoolgoing child means that it should provide all essential nutrients like carbohydrates, proteins, minerals, vitamins and some amount of included fat.

Along with it rather above all, the food items should preferably be easy to handle by the child.

Lunch break is a time when children show their emotions in the form of sharing food with their friends and peers. Sharing of tiffin helps bring children closer to friends and gives them a psychological boast.

This helps to make the child more social and develop a more balanced personality as he always has someone to rely upon in school where parents and family are absent.

After an early morning breakfast, children start to feel hungry by midday which becomes an ideal time for a mid-day snack. By the time the lunch break starts, the energy levels come down and the child starts to feel tired and listless, affecting concentration. Lunch break that starts after 4-5 periods is an ideal time for children to refresh and rejuvenate themselves.

While preparing the tiffin for a child, the mother should keep a few things in mind. First and foremost, "Tiffin-fatigue", meaning one kind of meal should not be served everyday as it gradually turns boring as children generally tend to dislike repetitions in almost all spheres, including food.

The same meal every day discourages the child from consuming his food. When food is not consumed at the right time, it affects the overall output of the child — both in studies and sports.

Second, always set the tiffin attractively so that, the child feels a sense of pride and teaches him the importance of neatness. Aluminium foils instead of newspaper or plastic bags should be used for reasons of hygiene. Always keep a napkin in the tiffin for the child.

Adequate amount of food in the tiffin for the child to share with his friends and to fulfil his requirements is important.

During lunch break, children want to play with their friends, therefore, use "finger-foods" in the tiffin as often as possible. Finger foods are foods that can be held in the hand and can be consumed while on the move — can be eaten while playing.

This phenomena is observed more often in boys than girls. Finger foods can be consumed faster and leave adequate time for the child to play.

The food that is packed in the tiffin should not be too oily or greasy as it can ruin the uniform and books. Cool down the food before packing it so that it does not sweat into the food and make it soggy and unpleasant to eat.

Introduce variety like french fries with paneer cutlets, vegetable or chicken sandwich, potato or paneer tiki with bread slices, pinwheel sandwich, rolled and stuffed chapatti, cheese macaroni with vegetables or chicken, small burgers with salad slices with various accompaniments like seasonal fruit or occasionally a good tetra pack of fruit juice or flavoured milk.

A balanced meal not only bolsters the blood glucose level so that the brain can function better, but also provides essential amino acids and fatty acids along with required nutrients like calcium and iron.

A healthy and a fulfilling tiffin keeps the child alert and abreast with the ongoing course in class. Children who eat their food well come home happier, energetic and ready to tackle their homework.
