Enter the realm of health and nutrition

Illustration by Sandeep JoshiFitness, nutrition and health are fast becoming areas of key interests in our society. Along with these, the increased life expectancy has resulted in a growing and aging population that has increased the demand for nutritional counselling in hospitals, nursing homes, community health programmes, schools, prisons, and door-to-door healthcare services in villages. Most of the universities and institutes offer courses in this field. “The three-year BSc (Home Science), MSc in food and nutrition and a one-year diploma in nutrition and dietetics are good choices for those interested in entering this field”, says Dr Damandeep, Head of the Department of Food and Nutrition, Home Science College, Sector 10, Chandigarh.

Nutritionists and dieticians inform and guide people about the diet they should take to improve their health, to avoid certain diseases or to keep the existing ailments under control. People suffering from certain diseases need to take extra care regarding their eating habits and the kind of food they eat. Having the right diet can help in speedy recovery or stability of the condition. Thus the major role of dieticians is to assist people in planning their diet, depending upon their age, ailment or lifestyle, she adds. Nutritionists counsel individuals and groups, organise food service systems in hospitals, schools, big organisations and hotels.

Administrative dieticians play a major role in large-scale meal planning and monitoring the food preparation process in hostels, canteens and other catering services. Clinical dieticians are associated with hospitals and nursing homes. They make diet charts and monitor the results of dietary therapy, depending on the nutritional needs of the patients. Research dieticians work in the field of nutrition in healthy and therapeutic food items. They study the effects of various types of diet on the body chemistry. They are also involved in conducting research in nutritional needs in different conditions and environments.

Consultant dieticians can work in slimming centres or carry out their own private practice. They perform nutritional screenings for their clients, and offer advice on diet-related concerns such as weight loss or cholesterol reduction. Some work for sports teams, supermarkets, and other nutrition-related businesses.

Mrs S.K. Mann, Dean, Home Sciences, Punjab Agriculture University, Ludhiana, says “Dietetics is an upcoming field and its scope is increasing everyday. After completing the course one can also apply to the Indian Dietetic Association for becoming a registered dietician (RD). This is a legally protected title”.

Even mundane jobs can be handled creatively

Q After completing my M.Com, I am now doing CWA (completed stage I of Inter). I have three years experience in accounts. My problem is that I am really bored with the clerical work in the accounts department which requires no creativity whatsoever. I would like to do something new and creative. Please tell me how I should proceed and move towards the future. I am a hardworking guy, but I am totally confused and because of this I can't even concentrate on my studies.

— Prahlad Nangia, Chandigarh

A I can understand your dilemma - and sympathise with it. But it is equally important to remember that a major portion of almost any job is of a routine nature - and unless one understands and accepts this, any job could become a boring one.

What you have to try and assess is whether your 3-year experience in the Accounts Department will, in the near future, makes you eligible for moving on to executive responsibility from the clerical tasks you are presently engaged in. If this is not likely in the firm you work with, it may be time to actively look for a change. But before doing so, please try and work out a clear-cut statement of your career goals for the next 5 to 10 years, factoring in both the CWA and what you mean by "creative" work, so that you have a clear criteria in mind when looking for a new job. Several options in finance including audit, taxation and financial consulting are possible.

It may sound somewhat glib, but even the most mundane jobs can be handled creatively by looking at them differently and in the context of the larger picture.

LLM in USA

Q Could you please tell me something about pursuing LLM in the US?

— Somi Ratra

A Generally, LLM programmes are intended for qualified lawyers who have several years of experience but wish to pursue further study or teaching as a career.

However, some LLM students, especially international students, have found a short-term position (6-12 months) in a non-academic employment setting to be beneficial to their ultimate career goals. A small handful of students secure permanent positions with legal employers in the US.

The programmes can be individually tailored to suit your interests and normally require a thesis of publishable quality. Some LLM programmes offer concentration in particular fields such as taxation, international law and comparative law, and may or may not require a thesis. For foreign-educated lawyers like you, some law schools offer LLM programmes such as "US Comparative Law" or "US Legal Studies", which are designed to give them an insight into the American legal system.

LLM programmes are typically 1-year long and do not normally require standardised tests such as the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) or the GRE for admission. International applicants may be required to take the TOEFL.

Other postgraduate degrees include master's degrees in Comparative Law (MCL), in Comparative Jurisprudence (MCJ), and in Legal Institutions (MLI). These programmes differ from the LLM in that they tend to be less specialised and less research-oriented.

At the doctoral level, Doctor of Juridical Science (SJD or JSD) and Doctor of Comparative Law Studies (DCL) are awarded. These are the most advanced degrees in law and generally intended for those pursuing an academic career in the legal field.

Scholarships for Law: Commonwealth Scholarships (MHRD), Rhode Scholarship, Ford Foundation, Inlaks Scholarship, J N Tata Trust, KC Mahindra Trust, Fulbright Scholarship. The universities that offer courses also offer limited scholarships to deserving students.

Automobile engg

Q I am a hardcore car freak. I will be taking the engineering entrance exams next year. Could you please suggest some recognised courses in Automobile Engineering in North India?

— Krishan Khanna, Jalandhar

A For some reason, a majority of the courses in Automobile Engineering are concentrated in the South. In the North, you could look at the following institutions offer a BE in the subject:

College of Engineering & Technology, Alahdpur N Gorakhpur 273001 (UP).

Institute of Technology & Mgt, Instnl Area, Sect 23A, HUDA, Gurgaon (Guru Jhambeswar Univ) (Har)

Terminology

Q What is the difference between a school, a college and a university? I would like to do my graduation in the USA, but I am thoroughly confused by the terminology.

— Arpit Kambhoj, Ambala

A In many countries a college is a secondary school and is very different from a university. In the USA, however, colleges and universities are quite similar. Often, both colleges and universities are referred to as "schools." Generally, both colleges and universities in the USA are four-year institutions that offer a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree. This is commonly known as an undergraduate or Bachelor’s degree.

The main difference is that most universities also offer a higher level of study after you complete your Bachelor’s degree — resulting in a Master’s degree (which they term as a graduate degree) or doctorate.

What confuses many international students is that Americans use the words "school," "college" and "university" interchangeably in conversation. For example, someone may ask, "Where do you go to school?" In this case, they simply want to know what university you are attending.

Adding to the confusion, universities are often divided into sections that are referred to as "colleges." The University of Idaho, for example, is organised into 10 colleges, which include the College of Engineering, the College of Law and the College of Agriculture. No matter which of these colleges you attend, your degree will be issued by the University of Idaho.

You will also hear the word "college" when people discuss two-year colleges. These colleges (also called community colleges or junior colleges) offer an associate degree. Many international students choose to get this type of degree and then transfer to a four-year college or university to study two more years to earn a Bachelor’s degree.
