Enter the realm of health and nutrition |
Enter the realm of health and nutrition Fitness, nutrition and health are fast becoming areas of key interests in our society. Along with these, the increased life expectancy has resulted in a growing and aging population that has increased the demand for nutritional counselling in hospitals, nursing homes, community health programmes, schools, prisons, and door-to-door healthcare services in villages. Most of the universities and institutes offer courses in this field. “The three-year BSc (Home Science), MSc in food and nutrition and a one-year diploma in nutrition and dietetics are good choices for those interested in entering this field”, says Dr Damandeep, Head of the Department of Food and Nutrition, Home Science College, Sector 10, Chandigarh. Nutritionists and dieticians inform and guide people about the diet they should take to improve their health, to avoid certain diseases or to keep the existing ailments under control. People suffering from certain diseases need to take extra care regarding their eating habits and the kind of food they eat. Having the right diet can help in speedy recovery or stability of the condition. Thus the major role of dieticians is to assist people in planning their diet, depending upon their age, ailment or lifestyle, she adds. Nutritionists counsel individuals and groups, organise food service systems in hospitals, schools, big organisations and hotels. Administrative dieticians play a major role in large-scale meal planning and monitoring the food preparation process in hostels, canteens and other catering services. Clinical dieticians are associated with hospitals and nursing homes. They make diet charts and monitor the results of dietary therapy, depending on the nutritional needs of the patients. Research dieticians work in the field of nutrition in healthy and therapeutic food items. They study the effects of various types of diet on the body chemistry. They are also involved in conducting research in nutritional needs in different conditions and environments. Consultant dieticians can work in slimming centres or carry out their own private practice. They perform nutritional screenings for their clients, and offer advice on diet-related concerns such as weight loss or cholesterol reduction. Some work for sports teams, supermarkets, and other nutrition-related businesses. Mrs S.K. Mann, Dean, Home Sciences, Punjab Agriculture University, Ludhiana, says “Dietetics is an upcoming field and its scope is increasing everyday. After completing the course one can also apply to the Indian Dietetic Association for becoming a registered dietician (RD). This is a legally protected title”.
Curriculum The curriculum is a mix of biological, social and food-based skills. It includes study of biological basis of health, food and culture, investigative skills, cell biology and metabolism, sociology, psychology, nutrition in health, human physiology, microbiology and immunology and biological basis of disease.
