Tribune News Service

Srinagar, November 18
A CRPF jawan was killed and two others injured in a suicide attack here this evening by militants on a CRPF camp at Indira Nagar, near the BB Cantonment, where the strategic 15 Corps of the Army is located.

The camp of the 62nd battalion of the CRPF is located in Hotel Scindia. There are a number of CRPF camps in and around the place.

An Army spokesman said the target of the militants was not the 15 Corp Headquarters as the troops deployed on guard duty reported firing near a cinema house, approximately 100 metres away from its main gate.

Two CRPF jawans injured in the incident were shifted to the Army base hospital. Till the filing of the report, the exchange of fire between militants and the security forces was on. Sources said a group of three to four militants attacked the CRPF post in the area around 6 pm.

A joint operation by the Army, the CRPF and the police was carried out, a defence spokesman said. The entire area of Indira Nagar and its adjoining localities was cordoned off. A defence spokesman said a joint operation had been launched in the area by the CRPF and the Army.

The attack on the CRPF camp came at a time when the force had started taking over from the BSF the lead in counter-insurgency operations in the Valley.
