Srinagar, November 14
The tourist resort of Gulmarg and other parts of north Kashmir today received the first snowfall of the season, plunging the mercury by several degrees, official sources said here.
“It started snowing in the afternoon in Khilanmarg, Apharvat, Alapathar and Gulmarg areas. We have reports of snowfall in higher altitudes also but it is only moderate,” an official at the Gulmarg police station told PTI.
Officials said higher reaches of Kupwara and Baramula districts bordering the Line of Control had moderate snowfall.
This has plunged the day temperatures in the plains by 3°C with a cloud cover keeping the sun away, a meteorological official said.
He said the forecast for the next 24 hours was cloudy across the valley and moderate to heavy snowfall in high altitude areas.
Meanwhile, airport authorities said all incoming and outgoing flights from the Srinagar airport had been cancelled due to poor visibility. A thick layer of fog was present in the airport area, making the landing of planes difficult, he added.
SHIMLA: The higher reaches of the tribal areas of Himachal Pradesh, which have been enveloped in a layer of fog and mist since Thursday had mild snowfall on Thursday night. Reports reaching here on Friday said the higher reaches in Bharmaur in Chamba district, Lahaul and Spiti and Kinnaur were partially covered with fresh snow.
Meanwhile, overcast conditions persisted in the Shimla and various other districts of the hill state for the second successive day.
