Mumbai top cop quizzed
Our Correspondent

Mumbai, November 8
Mr Ranjit Sharma, Mumbai’s Police Commissioner, is the latest police officer to be quizzed in the fake stamp paper racket allegedly masterminded by Abdul Karim Telgi.

He was today summoned before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the racket. He told reporters after the grilling that he was questioned about the investigations made by the Pune police after the forged stamp paper scam was unearthed two years ago.

Mr Sharma, who refused to divulge details of the questioning, said he was cooperating with the SIT.

Mr Sharma and a former Director-General of Police, Maharashtra, Mr Subash Malhotra, are being quizzed after it came to light that the two had recommended the felicitation of two officers allegedly linked with forger Abdul Karim Telgi.

The two officers, Assistant Commissioner of Police M. Mulani and Inspector Prakash Deshmukh are now under investigation.

In all, nine police officials investigating the Telgi scam were felicitated at a function presided over, by Mr Chhagan Bhujbal.

Meanwhile, a police team seized five guns, including imported weaponry, from the residence of Joint Commissioner of Police Sridhar Vagal, who was arrested yesterday. It is still not clear if Mr Vagal possessed licences for the weapons, the police said.
