THE National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) is likely to start its operations shortly.

Initiated by the Internet Service Provider Association (ISPAT) and funded by the Department of Information Technology, NIXI is setting up Internet exchanges in four metros — Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata. The Delhi exchange has been set at technology park in Noida and is operational. The other exchange will start functioning in the next few months. The Department of Information Technology has provided a grant of Rs 4.5 crore as capital investment.

All major Internet service providers — VSNL, MTNL, BSNL, Bharti broadband, Data access have become members of NIXI at the Delhi Exchange while some government organisations such as software technology parks, education and research network, National Information Centre (NIC) and Centre for Development of Advanced Computing have become members of this exchange.

NIXI is a limited liability company floated under Section 25 of the Companies Act with an objective to set up local Internet exchanges in India.

The exchange would facilitate interconnection for domestic Internet traffic between the ISP companies.
