Curfew in Agra after communal violence

Agra, October 13
Curfew was imposed in two localities here amid communal tension after violence erupted again this morning in a sequel to last evening’s clash between two communities which left a person dead and around 12 injured.

Prior to the imposition of curfew in Rakabganj and Montala, the police fired in the air and resorted to lathi charge to disperse mob which hurled petrol bombs and stones, SSP D.S. Chauhan said.

Twentyfive persons have been arrested for rioting, he said.

Violence broke out last evening after a mob of BSP supporters tried to attack Chaudhari Bashir, Minister of State for Science and Technology in the Mulayam Singh government and formerly a leader of the BSP, during a felicitation ceremony here.

The incident took communal hue when Bashir’s community members reacted by pelting BSP activists with stones.

Violence continued till midnight when the situation was brought under control with the deployment of additional police force.

But at around 10 am today, members of both communities again resorted to violence forcing imposition of curfew. — PTI
