13 Bakery case accused get bail

Vadodara, October 9
Thirteen of the 21 accused acquitted in the Best Bakery massacre case by a fast-track court were re-arrested here today after the Gujarat High Court issued bailable warrants against them last week and released on bail, official sources said.

The 13 arrested were produced before the court which released them on bail on a surety of Rs 10,000 each as prescribed by the high court on September 29, police Commissioner S.K. Sinha said.

Chastised by the Supreme Court for filing an “eyewash” appeal against the trial court verdict in the Best Bakery case, the Gujarat Government on September 29 filed an amended criminal petition in the high court seeking the retrial of the 21 persons acquitted in the case.

Officials said the remaining eight accused persons would also be re-arrested soon as per the high court directives.

The acquittal of the accused had led to widespread protest and key witness Zahira demanded a trial outside Gujarat, prompting the Supreme Court to pass strictures against the state government. — PTI
