Report links Samajwadi MP with Dawood

New Delhi, October 6
The Home Ministry has named a Samajwadi Party MP in a report on underworld don Dawood Ibrahim’s activities in Mumbai.

According to NDTV Abu Azmi, the party’s Maharashtra unit chief, is linked to the Karachi-based don.

The Rajya Sabha MP and Mumbai-based businessman has always been a controversial figure. Prosecuted for allegedly financing the 1993 Mumbai blasts, Azmi was discharged by the Supreme Court.

He was elected to the Rajya Sabha as a Samajwadi Party MP last year, but Azmi could now find himself in the middle of another controversy.

The internal security report on criminal gang activities in Mumbai has named Azmi as a close associate of Dawood.

Azmi claims the charges against him are politically motivated.

“I have been in the area since 1973 where Dawood used to be. I know all of them but I have no links of this sort with them. Nor have I asked for help for the party,” said Azmi.

Like in the Amarmani Tripathi case, the Samajwadi Party says there is no question of asking Azmi to step down as MP.
