Interaction on group cohesiveness

Dr K.K. Uppal, Professor, University of Business School (UBS), Chandigarh, and Dr Sanjeev Sharma, faculty member, UBS, monitored a workshop with students of MBA and MCA at Gujranwala Guru Nanak Institute of Management and Technology, here today.

Dr Uppal interacted with students on ‘group cohesiveness’ by conducting a management exercise called ‘The broken squares game’ in which the group attachment of students was adjudged and they were encouraged to think beyond self and to understand other’s needs while working in a group. He said that the human mind was like a parachute as it worked only when it was open.

Dr Uppal narrated stories, anecdotes and quoted proverbs that made the session more interesting and interactive. He enlightened the students on the importance of working in a team, being cooperative and receptive to other’s ideas which was the real essence of being successful.

Dr Sanjeev Sharma shared his valuable thoughts on ‘Successful entrepreneurship’. He motivated the students by saying that perseverance, dedication, open mindedness and innovation were the key factors for making it big in life. He narrated the stories of some successful entrepreneurs, how they turned from rags to riches.

BVM School honours students

Ludhiana, September 22
The management of Bharitya Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School, Udham Singh Nagar, here organised a function today to honour its students who excelled in various sports tournaments organised by the Education Department. The students were given appreciation certificates, medals and trophies for their outstanding performance in sports. Mr Mitter Sen, president, BVM Trust, Mr M M Mamba, president, BVM School, Kitchlu Nagar branch, Mr K.C. Maini, manager, Udham Singh Nagar branch, Mr R K Behal, Treasurer, BVM Trust, Ms Sunil Arora, Principal and Mr Baljit Singh, sports in charge of the school, were present on the occasion.

Boys and girls who won laurels during these tournaments were felicitated at the function. In the under-14 (girls) table tennis three students represented Ludhiana district in the Punjab schools championship at Amritsar — Nirdosh Sood, Kirti Aggarwal and Shweta Lamba. In basketball, two students participated in the Punjab schools championship — Chandni Jain and Radhik Sharma.

In chess, three students represented Ludhiana in the Punjab school championship — Khushboo Arora, Jyoti Kalra and Steena Singla. In judo, the school team won two gold and two bronze medals in the district. In the boys under-14, two students participated in the district championship — Jagdeep Singh and Sumit Aggarwal.

In football, student took part in the Punjab schools championship, Harsimran Singh.

In badminton, two students participated in the district meet — Sahil Sharma and Vivek Mehta.

In swimming, Bikramjit Singh won one silver and two bronze medals in the district meet. He was the member of the Ludhiana team in the Punjab schools meet.

Pramod Gupta represented the zone in the district table tennis meet while Aakash Gulati and Kanish Misser were the members of Ludhiana basketball team which took part in the Punjab schools meet. In chess, Gaurav, Hemant Brar and Nishant were the members of Ludhiana team which bagged the title in the Punjab schools championship.

Sakshi, Isha and Ekta Malik represented Ludhiana in the Punjab chess meet (under-17) and helped their team to win the title. In the judo meet, Manjeet Kaur won the gold medal.

In the cross-country race, BVM school students won the gold in the boys and girls sections.

School board cultural fest begins today

Ludhiana, September 22
A three-day cultural festival being organised by the Punjab School Education Board for students of government schools of the district will begin here tomorrow.
On the first day, six contests will be held for students from Classes I to IV. These are shabad singing, declamation, calligraphy, painting, fancy dress and folk song competitions. For declamation, the students have five topics to choose from — “Kudrat de sab bande”, “Rukh te manukh”, “Mawaan thandian chhawan”, “Bhare baste, lamme raste” and “Khedan de din chaar”.

On Wednesday, students from Classes V to VIII will take part in shabad singing, vaar singing, kavishri, declamation, calligraphy, painting, folk song, poetry recitation and Punjabi folk dance competitions.

On Thursday, there will be 12 contests, including one-act plays and creative writing. Creative writing, hopscotch and one-act play competitions will be held at Ramgarhia Girls Senior Secondary School, Millerganj; bhangra and poetry recitation competitions at Hindi Putri Pathshala, Khanna; shabad recitation, folk song and tug-of-war competitions at Guru Harkrishan Public School, Dugri; vaar singing and kavishri contests at Satguru Partap Singh Academy, Bhaini Sahib; fancy dress, gidha and pithu garam competitions at Guru Nanak Khalsa Senior Secondary School, Model Town; declamation and painting competitions at Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Bharat Nagar.

PCTE student tops in seminar

Monika Bansal, MBA first year student of the Punjab College of Technical Education (PCTE), bagged the first prize in a seminar organised by the Indian Society of Technical Education (ISTE) at the College of Agricultural Engineering, Punjab Agricultural University, yesterday.

The theme of the seminar was ‘Energy, environment and sustainable development’. Papers on the topic were invited from students from Punjab Engineering College (PEC), Chandigarh, Jammu University, Guru Nanak Dev University, Punjab Agricultural University and other institutes.

Three categories were constituted for presenting the papers, which included post graduate students, undergraduate students and diploma holders. In the section of post graduate students, there were 15 participants from various universities and institutes of north India. Dr K.N.S. Kang, Director of PCTE, congratulated Monika on her success.

NSS volunteers take part in health awareness drive

The NSS volunteers of GHG Khalsa College, Gurusar Sadhar participated in a family health awareness campaign, which was organised in collaboration with the Punjab Health Department here today on the college campus.

Dr S.N. Tiwari, Civil Surgeon, was the chief guest. Mr Manjit Singh Khattra, Director, GHG Khalsa Institutions welcomed the Civil Surgeon. In his address, Dr Tiwari stressed that the public should be made aware of AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases. About 400 NSS volunteers along with local prominent personalities and workers of the Punjab Health Department participated in the function.

Talent Hunt: The talent hunt programme organised by the Malwa Central College for Women for BEd and MEd students ended here today. Declamation, debate, song, folk song competitions, rangoli, flower arrangement, mehndi, quiz, solo and group dance competitions were organised.

Drama and skit competitions were held today. Nirmal Rishi, a prominent theatre personality presided over the function.

Nehru kendra functions

Poetical-recitation competitions and group-discussions were organised by Nehru Yuva Kendra at Government High School, Begowal, today. As many as 20 students participated in the poetry recitation competitions. Group discussion was conducted on topics like “Drugs and modern woman.” The judges include Mrs Mandeep Kaur and Mrs Rajwant Kaur. The chief guest of the function was Mr Narinder Pal Singh, Head Master of the school.

The poetry competitions were won by Pawandeep Kaur (Xth class), Jatinder Singh (VIII th class) and Gurdeep Singh (VIth class) who respectively secured first, second and third positions. They were honoured by Nehru Yuva Kendra.

Balwant Gargi remembered

The Punjabi Sahit Akademi, presented a special programme on the life of theatre personality Balwant Gargi in Punjabi Bhavan, here yesterday.
Fans of Gargi got together to pay him tributes and share experiences with film personality Amrik Gill from Mumbai, who highlighted interesting aspects from Gargi’s life.

Mr Gill, a graduate of the Film and Television Institute of India, had started his film career under the guidance of Gargi and has a number of national and international awards to his credit.

Amrik Gargi, an actor and student of Gargi from Mumbai, presented his experiences in the form of a script, ‘Gargi — the great’. In the one-and-a-half hour programme, he showcased his wit and humour with a touch of sensitivity and pathos and read the script with perfect expressions and actions. Throughout the performance, the audience sat spellbound, wanting to know more of experiences he had had with Gargi.

Amrik said he had met Gargi at Panjab University, Chandigarh, recalling an incident, Amrik said he had become rebellious against Gargi in his early college days, under the guidance of late Kumar Vikal, a famous poet, but soon forgot his grievances and became his student in the Department of Indian theatre, Panjab University. He said the way Gargi taught them was amazing as he endeared himself to his students.

After this, Amrik went to the National School of Drama and Gargi shifted to Delhi, where he got an opportunity to stay with him for four years. Amrik drew a true to heart picture of his days with Gargi.

In this context, he narrated an experience when he had accompanied Gargi to a school in Ambala, where he wanted to see his children. But his estranged wife did not allow him to meet his children and they came back, heartbroken and disillusioned.

Amrik ended the script in a dramatic way, when he said that after death Gargi met Marilyn Monroe, the woman he had always wanted to meet.
