Bid to storm Army camp, 2 killed

Two Pakistani terrorists were shot when they tried to make a Tanda-style suicide attack on an Army camp here today.

A woman was killed and three children were injured by the terrorists when the tried to break into a nearby house for shelter.

The gun-battle between the security forces and the terrorists continued in the Ghatti area of Kathua district for the third day today. The Army has now taken over the command of the operation. Army sources said such attacks were made in desperation after the killing of Gazi Baba. More of such attacks were expected.

In the first-ever suicide attack in Poonch, the terrorists wearing Army combat uniform tried to sneak into the brigade headquarters at about 4.20 a.m. Alert guards opened fire and the militants tried to take shelter in a house. The terrorists killed Zahida Parveen (28) and wounded Parveen Akhtar, Garzan Kousar and Farhan.

They then tried to enter the Army installation from the rear side by hurling five grenades. They were shot by jawans who encircled the area.

Meanwhile, reinforcements of the Army have been rushed to Kathua from here and Pathankot.

SRINAGAR (TNS): At least eight militants were killed and two injured in separate incidents while a large quantity of arms and ammunition were seized during searches in the valley since Wednesday.

The militants also hurled two hand grenades at security force personnel at different locations in Anantnag without causing any damage.

The police said the militants of the Hizb-ul Mujahideen killed a fellow militant at Kokernag in Anantnag on Wednesday night.

Two militants of the Lashkar-e-Toiba were killed in an encounter with the security forces at Khimran, Achabal in Anantnag district. They have been identified as Mushtaq Ahmad Khan and Javed Ahmad Rather. Two AK rifles, 10 magazines with 240 rounds, four hand grenades, two rocket boosters and a wireless set were recovered from the site of the encounter.

The militants lobbed a grenade towards a security force picket at Lal Chowk in Anantnag on Wednesday.
