Plan to introduce Bill on cow slaughter shelved

New Delhi, August 21
In the face of stiff opposition from its crucial allies the TDP, the DMK, the JD (U) and the PMK apart from other parties, the government today beat a retreat in the Lok Sabha and shelved plans for introduction of a Bill for banning cow slaughter but decided to convene an all-party meeting in a bid to evolve a consensus.

“The government has decided to defer introduction of the Prevention of Cruelty to Cows Bill, 2003,” Parliamentary Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj announced in the House after it witnessed uproarious scenes over the move to table it. — PTI
