Geelani retires, replaced by
Sehrai Jammu, August 20 Syed Ali Shah Geelani, after having fallen out with the All Party Hurriyat Conference leadership over the issue of non-expulsion of the People’s Conference from the 26-party conglomerate, had failed to persuade the Jamaat leadership to come out of the amalgam. Consequently, he requested the Jamait-e-Islami Amir, Mr Nazir Ahmed Kashani, to allow him to retire from the parent organisation of which he had been a founder. The matter was discussed by members of the Majlis-e Shoura, who accepted Mr Geelani’s demand. Two other senior party leaders, Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah and Sheikh Ghulam Hassan, also had made a plea for retirement, which was accepted by the Shoura. It is not yet known if the Jamaat leadership has agreed to the request of Mr Geelani that, after his retirement, he may be allowed to float a new party parallel to the APHC. Since Mr Sehrai, who was released recently, was a trusted man of Mr Geelani, indications are that he may be sent as representative of the Jamait-e-Islami in the executive committee of the APHC. The APHC leadership has again deferred the meeting of its executive committee and the General Council, as it awaits nomination of the Jamaat representative in the conglomerate. The APHC chairman, Molvi Abbas Ansari, told this correspondent: “We have postponed these two meetings to allow sufficient time to the Jamait-e-Islami to send a replacement of Syed Ali Shah Geelani, who has opted out of the conglomerate in protest against his demand for the expulsion of the People’s Conference being rejected by the Hurriyat leaders.” He said: “Though the Jamait-e-Islami has not disclosed its cards, indications are that it will continue to remain under the APHC umbrella.” |

The body of an unidentified person was recovered by the police from Naristan in the Tral area of Pulwama district. Meanwhile, the Maisuma locality and its adjoining areas in the heart of Srinagar observed a shutdown today as groups of youths indulged in stone-pelting and burning of tyres on the roads in protest against the alleged arrest of Ashiq Ahmad Pohloo who went missing on Monday. His family alleged that he was picked up by some unidentified security personnel. The BSF averted a major tragedy when it defused a 5 kg IED in south Kashmir, while elsewhere in the valley the security forces seized large quantities of arms and explosives overnight. Troops detected the powerful IED planted by the militants near Sheerabad Tral in south Kashmir this morning during a routine patrol, a BSF spokesman said. —
