Sexual control & violence
Violence
against women
is neither culture nor region-specific; it cuts across community and class. Shocking though it is, the fact is that
violence against women has become an acceptable norm of life, writes

Come
rains & a spate of thread ceremonies follow
Rani Sircar
ONE of the nicest festivals of
North India, Rakshabandhan or Rakhi, as it is popularly known, is held
every year on full moon day in the Indian lunar months of Sravan or
Bhadra. On this day, sisters tie a rakhi or silken thread around
the wrists of their brothers or of those men from whom they expect to
get brotherly protection. In return, the girls and women get sweets,
money or gifts, even jewellery.

FROM learning Hath yoga to
alleviate his childhood ailments to campaigning for Europe’s last
preserved natural river — Vistula — Jacek Bozek has come a long way.
Jacek, now 43, believes that his life’s course has indeed been
wayward. Young Jacek couldn’t concentrate on studies as he had
bronchitis and spent a lot of time in hospitals.
A tribute
Comedian who
took his roles seriously
V. Gangadhar
ON all the three occasions I
met him, Johnny Walker was initially reluctant to discuss films. At his
Oshiwara (a Mumbai suburb) home, he was content growing fruits and
talking about the problems of nurturing mango, guava and coconut trees.
The objects of his passion now were a couple of olive plants which were
coming up nicely.
