NRI dream turns deadly for Narinder
Sushil Manav

Fatehabad, August 9
A village girl’s wish to marry an NRI and settle in England led to a murderous attack on her by her husband’s maternal uncle. Ms Narinder Kaur is now struggling for life at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Rohtak. The assailant, Tarsem Singh, who shot at her with his licenced gun yesterday night, is still at large and the police has booked him under the IPC and the Arms Act.

Narinder, a resident of Rupanwali village in this district has fought a long and lonely battle to get her rightful place in her husband’s home. She was married to Ravinder Singh, an Indian settled in England on April 5, 1995. Tarsem Singh, was the felicitator in arranging the match. The marriage was registered in the Registrar’s Office on April 7, 1995. Ravinder went back to England with his father Ajit Singh and mother Surender Kaur on April 11, promising Narinder that he would arrange for her immigration papers and call her to London soon.

The promise was never kept.

Ravinder’s family went on delaying the procedure to call her to London giving one reason or the other. In the meantime they allegedly managed to extort Rs 5 lakh from her parents on the pretext of opening a bar for Ravinder in London. Ravinder’s family came to India at least twice during this period but went back after giving assurances.

Finally, Ravinder’s family told Narinder’s parents over the telephone to marry her off somewhere else as Ravinder had married in London.

Narinder lodged an FIR against Ravinder, his father, mother, maternal uncle and maternal aunt on October 19, 2002. Since then she had been running from pillar to post to get justice but it has eluded her. Her FIR was quashed by the police on the basis of a medical certificate sent by Ravinder’s parents stating that since he was physically challenged he could not have married Narinder.

Meanwhile, a lease deed of a house was transferred by the Wakf Board to Narinder’s name. The property, belonging to the board, was leased to Ravinder’s father and it was transferred to Narinder on the basis of her marriage certificate.

Yesterday night when Narinder Kaur went to occupy the house, her husband’s maternal uncle Tarsem Singh came there and allegedly shot at her. She was rushed to the general hospital, Tohana, for treatment but the hospital authorities referred her to Rohtak.
