KIDNAPPED BOY RESCUED

Four persons who had kidnapped a teenage boy after selling him the dreams of a promising career in modelling and films were arrested yesterday evening by the Saraswathi Vihar police in Shakurpur, North-West district. The quartet had also persuaded the boy to carry money and gold ornaments worth Rs 7 lakh from his house at Sawai Madhopur in Rajasthan.

HC overrules Delhi Govt order on management quota
New Delhi, August 2
The Delhi High Court has directed the Maharaja Agrasen Institute of Technology to admit a student under the management quota disregarding the merit list, thereby rejecting a Delhi Government order that admissions on management quota, even within its five per cent allocation, have to be granted strictly on merit.

Most girls see light at the end of the dowry tunnel: Survey

A majority of young women in the national Capital between 18 and 25 years are not just against dowry, but also strongly believe that literacy and awareness can eradicate the social evil, points out a survey.

The ambitious anti-dowry campaign launched by the Rawal gotra of the Gujjar community in the district early last year is picking up momentum with the community planning a renewed campaign to rid the society of the menace later this year when the marriage season starts.

Two inter-state gangsters held

Two inter-state gangsters of the Kishan Pahelwan gang and residents of Haryana, who were involved in at least a dozen cases of murder, kidnapping, extortion and Arms Act, were arrested last evening by the Special Cell of the Delhi Police near the Wazirpur twin tower in Pitam Pura.

Septuagenarian widow found murdered
New Delhi, August 2
A 70-year-old widow was found murdered at her E-3 Greater Kailash-I residence in South district. The victim, identified as Suran Kantha Mehra, had a sharp cut on her neck. The wound was probably inflicted with a kitchen knife, the police said.

Most of the rules and regulations of the Food and Civil Supplies Department are being openly flouted by owners of fair price depots all over Haryana. The department authorities have reportedly failed to take action against them despite repeated complaints of the consumers.

L-G directs govt to select new landfill sites
New Delhi, August 2
Lt-Governor Vijai Kapoor directed the Delhi Government to select five landfill sites in different parts of the Capital, as the present sites would be overflowing in few months. He also directed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi to make available chlorine tablets in all ration shops run by the state government during the rainy season.

SI accused of issuing death threat
Noida, August 2
A Sub-Inspector in Greater Noida has been accused of threatening a property dealer. The property dealer has sent a written complaint to the chairman of Greater Noida, Lalit Srivastava, as well as to the SSP, Rajiv Kishan. The property dealer said that the SI had threatened him that he could get him killed in a fake encounter.

Three Kashmiri militants were convicted by a city court today. They were arrested one year back under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA) for possessing explosive substances to carry out terrorist activities in the Capital.

Kosli DSP shoots self
Rewari , August 2
The DSP of Kosli, Mr Paramjit Singh, reportedly committed suicide by shooting himself with his personal licensed revolver at his official residence at about 12 noon today. He was 42. He is survived by his wife and son. The circumstances that led to the extreme step could not be ascertained.

3 held for stealing idols
Bhiwani, August 2
A police team from Uttranchal raided a house at the local TIT colony and recovered stolen gold and silver idols and cash. Three persons, one from Charkhi Dadri and two from Bhiwani, have reportedly been arrested in this connection.

Bid to take away cows for slaughtering foiled
Sonepat, August 2
A large number of ‘brahamcharis’ of Gurukul Aghawanpur foiled an attempt by smugglers to take away cows for slaughtering to UP on the Bega-Ganaur road, about 25-km from here, last night.

Youth knocked down
Noida, August 2
A youth, riding a motorcycle, was crushed to death by a speeding vehicle near the GT Road bypass in Dadri. According to Dadri Police, Dinesh of Badalpur, an employee of Daewoo Motors, was returning to his house on his motor bike yesterday. He was hit on the GT road bypass by some speeding vehicle.

The Delhi Government has informed the Delhi High Court that the pass percentage in its schools this year has gone up and the number of compartment cases has come down.

Telecom dept directed to pay compensation
Bhiwani, August 2
The District Consumer Dispute Redressal Forum has directed the telecom department to pay Rs 2,500 as compensation to a subscriber. The fine includes litigation cost also and the department would liable to pay 12 percent interest if the compensation amount is not paid to the plaintiff within two months.
