Karnataka steel plant blast kills 7

Shimoga (Karnataka), July 31
In a ghastly industrial mishap, seven employees were charred to death and nine injured in a blast at the steel making shop of the SAIL-run steel plant at Bhadravathi, near here, early today.

Two senior officials were among the victims who died on the spot. The blast occurred in the Visweswariah Iron and Steel Limited, a unit of the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), on the banks of the Bhadra, police and company sources said.

A high-level committee has been formed to probe the incident. Agitated workers near the factory alleged an “unrectified leakage” had caused the blast. — PTI
