US think-tank warns of another Kargil
New Delhi, July 13 The Los Angeles-based Rand Corporation, which specialises in counter-terrorism and security matters, in its latest report has predicted the “recurrence of a Kargil-type adventure by Pakistan” if the two countries fail to settle their problems soon. The study, “Lessions Learned Form The Kargil Crisis”, said India will respond forcefully to any future Pakistani military adventures. The report prepared by Ashley J. Tellis, C. Christine Fair and Jamison Jo Medby, however, ruled out the possibility of conventional conflict as it was risky. Tellis till recently served as Political Adviser in the US Embassy in India. Despite the new-found bonhomie between the two countries, the report finds “no end to the persistence of unconventional conflicts”. “The state-sponsored terrorism will remain an attractive mode of operation in large parts because conventional conflicts remain risky,” it said. The report has put much onus on Pakistan to end tension in the region.
