Ajay Prasad new Defence Secretary

In a major bureaucratic reshuffle affecting 18 IAS officers, the government today appointed Ajay Prasad as Defence Secretary, Mr Dhirender Singh as Disinvestment Secretary and Mr K.K. Jaiswal as the new IT Secretary.

Mr Prasad, a 1969 batch IAS officer of the Himachal Pradesh cadre, was Officer on Special Duty to Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani.

Disinvestment Secretary S.S. Meenakshi Sundaram (Karnatka, 1968) has been made Member of the Atomic Energy Commission and Space Commission.

Information Technology Secretary R.R. Shah (UP, 1967) has been shifted as the Secretary, Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion while Mr K.K. Jaiswal (UP, 1968) has been moved from the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation to the Department of Information Technology as Secretary.

Mr Singh, a 1968 batch IAS officer of the Karnataka cadre, would replace Mr S.S. Meenakshi Sundaram who has been appointed financial adviser and ex-officio Secretary in the Department of Space.

Mr B.S. Baswan, 1967 IAS officer, has been moved from the Ministry of Tribal Affairs to the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment as Secretary.

Mr S.P. Arya (UP, 1968) has been appointed as the Secretary Ministry of Tribal Affairs and 1968 batch officer of the Rajasthan cadre Adarsh Kishore has been promoted as Secretary and moved to the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation from the Department of Economic Affairs.

Mr P.S.S. Thomas (Karnataka, 1969), who was Adviser to the Planning Commission, has been appointed Secretary General National Human Rights Commission in the rank and pay of a Secretary.

Mr Mano Ranjan (UP, 1969) has replaced Mr Thomas as Adviser Planning Commission while Mr A.N. Tiwari (Andhra Pradesh, 1969) has been appointed as a Special Secretary in the Ministry of Power.

While Mr Pratyush Sinha, a 1969 batch officer of the Bihar cadre, has been brought as Secretary (Border Management) in the Ministry of Home Affairs, Mr A.K. Misra has been made Adviser, Planning Commission in the rank and pay of a Secretary.

Mr Saibal K. Purkayastha (Assam and Meghalaya, 1969) has been appointed the Secretary (Coordination and Public Grievances) in the Cabinet Secretariat and Mrs Adarsh Mishra has been renotified in her present post as Special Secretary Ministry of Mines.

While Mr Anil Baijal (UT, 1969) has also been renotified as Vice Chairman of the Delhi Development Authority in the rank and pay of a Secretary, Mr B.P. Mishra (UT, 1969) has been moved from the Department of Expenditure to the Department of Economic Affairs as Additional Secretary.

Mr D. Swarup, presently as Additional Secretary (Budget) in the Department of Economic Affairs, has been made Additional Secretary in the Department of Expenditure. Mr Swarup will remain in full additional charge of the post of Additional Secretary (Budget) till further orders, sources said.
