Pervez’s 4-stage mantra on Kashmir

Washington, June 27
After suggesting a West Asia-style peace roadmap on Kashmir, Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf has outlined a four-stage approach to resolve the issue, saying any search for an immediate solution will be rejected by extremists in India and Pakistan.

His suggestion for a West Asia-type peace roadmap on Kashmir involving the USA has been rejected by India.

After a meeting with members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee at the Capitol Hill, where he talked about the Kashmir issue and the situation in Afghanistan and Iraq, Musharraf told reporters “we have adopted a step-by-step approach”.

“First, the two sides — Pakistan and India — have to start talking to one another to hold dialogue. Stage two is accepting the centrality of the Kashmir dispute to be resolved for better relations between India and Pakistan, stage three being the elimination of whatever is unacceptable to Pakistan, India and the people of Kashmir and stage four is trying to hit the solution that is win-win for Pakistan, India and the people of Kashmir,” he said.

He said, “When we talk of solution, there are contentious solutions which are not acceptable to either side and then there are extremists who will not accept any flexibility or any accommodation being shown by either side.”
