Hail, rain in HP areas

Shimla, June 17
A brief spell of rain accompanied by hail lashed the capital here and its surrounding areas this afternoon.

The Regional Horticultural Research Station at Mashobra near here recorded 3.6 mm of rainfall, weather officials said.

The rainfall recorded yesterday, from noon to midnight was 15.2 mm, they said adding 41.2 mm of rainfall was recorded at Mashobra this month. While the maximum temperature recorded was 26.7 degrees and the minimum 14.0 degrees.

Reports of rain was also received from Karsog, Jubbal-Kotkhai and Rampur. In Hamirpur and Una a brief drizzle helped to bring down the day temperatures that had touched 40 degrees.

According to Dr S.P. Bhardwaj, Associate Director (research and extension) at the Station, the rainfall recorded yesterday, from noon to midnight was 15.2 mm.

So far in the month of June this year the rainfall recorded at Mashobra was 41.2 mm which was normal at this time of the year, Dr Bhardwaj said.

Dr Bhardwaj said the rain in the last three days would be very helpful to the fruit crop and would also revive the natural water resources that had dried-up due to high temperature’s experienced in the capital this summer. He said the rainfall would reduce the rate of evaporation of water and would help in the percolation of water into the ground. UNI
